A delegation of Dogra Sadar Sabha members and prominent citizens appraised the Divisional Commissioner Jammu about the concerns of the citizens of Jammu regarding safeguarding of Dogra heritage and other issues on 24-08-2021.This was disclosed in a statement issued by Th. Gulchain Singh Charak, Former Minister, Founding Vice Chairman of the Governing Body of Mubarak Mandi, Jammu Heritage Society and President, Dogra Sadar Sabha, J&K, here today. He said that the Divisional Commissioner was appraised that conversion of Mubarak Mandi into a Hotel would not be in the interest of promoting heritage tourism in Jammu as the Complex was the primary heritage of outstanding significance in Jammu and Kashmir which would get obliterated by such conversion.
Sh.Charak said that it was appraised in the meeting that the Comprehensive Conservation and Reuse Plan which was based on the collective knowledge and inputs in the deliberations of the prominent citizens and experts since the inception of the Mubarak Mandi Jammu Heritage Society needs to be implemented as it aims to make the Complex a World Class Heritage Tourism Attraction. The framework for its implementation as approved by the Governing Body aims to complete the conservation of the entire complex within the shortest possible time. It was also brought to notice that Monuments of outstanding significance were protected all over the world and conversion of a protected monument into a commercial hotel was unheard of.
He said that it was also emphasized that the proposed knowledge areas, museums and galleries in the ancient structures, especially lifestyle galleries in the Rani Palaces depicting diverse cultures and lifestyles of Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, etc will attract foreign tourists in large numbers placing Jammu on the International heritage tourism map. Moreover, diversion of pilgrim/ tourists visiting Vaishnodeviji to Jammu will further boost Jammu’s tourist economy. Especially, the light and sound programme, craft bazaar, souvenir shops, small food outlets will provide employment and also rejuvenate the adjoining areas of the old city. The Heritage hotel, on the other hand, will only benefit a few rich and will be out of bounds for the common man and ordinary tourists/ pilgrims at the cost of defacing the oldest and the most unique heritage of the Rani Mahals. It will not contribute anything to the promotion of heritage tourism to Jammu.
He said that the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu assured the delegation that their concerns will be put before the Governing Body for its consideration in its meeting.
