Women’s Day Greeting

March 8, Jammu. Thakur Gulchain Singh Charak, Former Minister and President, Dogra Sadar Sabha (DSS), Jammu and Kashmir, has extended heartiest greetings to all on behalf of the Sabha on the occasion of International Women’s Day (IWD) which is being celebrated annually across the globe since its adoption by the United Nations in 1977.

Recalling the origin and evolution of the Day during a meeting of the Executive Body of the DSS, Shri Charak revealed that since its foundation in 1904 A.D., the Dogra Sadar Sabha has recognised the role of women in holistic development of the society. The DSS has campaigned for women’s emancipation, their education and economic empowerment and against female feticide, dowry system and purdah system. In keeping with this tradition, Late Naraato Devi and Late Mumtaz Begum were appointed the Presidents of  Mehla wing  of the DSS long ago. Those were the times when the first Women’s Day observance, dated February 28, 1909, in New York City of the United States of America, organized by the Socialist Party of America, at the suggestion of activist Theresa Malkiel as the National Woman’s Day, was also reported.

Shri Charak said that the DSS carries this spirit and tradition forward by organizing annual Women’s conferences titled “Dhiyan Dogren Diyan – Ik Milati” and various other programmes wherein Dogra women achievers are honoured and encouraged to be active participants in all spheres of social, cultural, political, scientific, educational, administrative fields, sports, etc.

During the meeting, a resolution was adopted with an appeal to the women folk of Duggar Pradesh to come forward with greater focus and get involved in the process of nation building, shoulder to shoulder with their men folk, by acquiring education, skill and developing professional competencies.
