It was an act of rekindling universal love as the Dogra Sadar Sabha (DSS) observed the annual “Save Birds, Save Water Day” (आओ पक्षियों को पानी पिलाए) initiative on the 4th of May 2019 at the Dogra Sadar Sabha Bhawan and the adjoining Zanana Park in collaboration with State Wild Life Department. The initiative that was started seven years back by this 115 years old secular organization of Dogras is devoted to the cause of universal brotherhood and love for nature in the Dogra region.
As a very welcome gesture amidst political and climatic heat of the warm climate, this event manifests the age-old Dogriyat when the prominent members of the civil society representing all walks of life are seen together in their traditional mutual love and brotherhood across any communal, linguistic or regional differences under the banner of Dogra Sadar Sabha.
This annual feature of public awakening and kindness towards the mute creatures has become very popular among the nature lovers and general population who adore this service to the creations of God largely dependent on humanity after rampant urbanization and vanishing natural water bodies and jungles.
The event involved exchange of views on nature preservation and care of flora-fauna. President DSS Th. Gulchain Singh Charak distributed thousands of earthen ‘hang-pots’ to be hung on the trees and other places in homes, schools and offices and filled with water regularly. This act of kindness helps many a thirsty tiny creatures in this season of simmering heat and saves their lives as the mercury sores high in the coming months. A new addition this time was the placard slogan competition. Many institutes participated with full enthusiasm. Ms. Samriti of Rich Harvest School stood first, Isha Manhas of Shiksha Niketan School second & Riya Sharma of Fauji Public School bagged the third price. Nidhi Kumari & Anu Bhagat of Dogra B.E.D College were awarded consolation prizes by a team of Judges namely Prof. N.K. Dogra, Col. Karan Singh Retd and Sh. Tahir Shawl Regional Wild Life warden Jammu Region. The Prizes will be distributed to the award winners in the institutions where they are studying.
Many prominent citizens along with representatives from educational institutions, teaching fraternity, army veterans, officers from the State Wild Life Department, philanthropists and students besides Sarpanches, Panches, Numberdars and Chowkidars joined in the noble effort and humane cause. Speaking on the occasion various prominent citizens including Shri Ashok Angurana, IAS, Sh. Suresh Gupta, Chief Wild Life Warden, Dr. Rajan Singh, DFO, Prof. N.K.Dogra, Col. Karan Singh Jamwal, Prem Sagar Gupta, Brig. M.S. Jamwal, Col. Virendra K. Sahi, VrC, Gambhir Dev Singh Charak, Janak Khajuria, S. Kulbir Singh, Amanat Ali Shah, Chhankar Singh, Swarn Singh, Harpal Singh Jasrotia, Sohail Kazmi, Madan Rangila, appreciated the great peaceful effort of kindness and admired the participation from a wide cross sections of society.
The former minister Th. Gulchain Singh Charak said that besides saving the tiny lives of the birds the event is also a reminder to the humanity to save water, which is getting scarce and costlier throughout the world. The predictions are that the futuristic wars may be fought over water. He requested participants in large numbers to keep the ‘hang pots’ filled up with water and placed conveniently for the birds to quench their thirst in free from fear surroundings.
He also called upon people to save precious potable water and adopt rain water harvesting for use in non-drinking activities.
All the participants were later led by the President DSS in the form of a rally culminating at Zanana Park where a large number of earthen pots filled with water were hanged on the trees and walls of the park for the birds to drink water.
Students from various Institutions like Dogra HSS, Dogra Degree College, Rich Harvest School, Humanity Public School, Alexander Memorial, G.H.S, Dogra Hall, Deptt of MA, Integrated (Hons) in History, School of Social Sciences, Cluster University of Jammu, Fauji Public School, Shangrila Public School, Sher-e- Kashmir Hr. Sec School, Lawrence Public School, S.P. Smart, Model Academy, S.D. Tarapuri, Oriental Academy etc., Participated in the event.,
