Jammu, 5 May: When the State is heated up with summer, simmering politics and burning with issues of unrest, lawlessness and turmoil of terror, stone pelting and ceasefire violations; the noble and humane initiative of the Dogra Sadar Sabha (DSS) stands out as a message of peace, consideration and compassion for the humanity. As a yearly activity, Dogra Sadar Sabha observes “Save the Birds and Save the Water Day” on the onset of summer. This Endeavour of the DSS finds appreciation by all cross sections of society and lovers of nature. ‘Saving the birds’ involves providing of traditional earthen hang pots to keep the water for birds on the roof tops and on the trees during the scorching heat of summer when the water sources and forests are depleting day by day. With this in view, the Dogra Sadar Sabha under the chairmanship of Th. Gulchain Singh Charak, Former Minister and President Dogra Sadar Sabha decided to observe the day as “Save the Birds Day” and “Conserve the Water” as well, on 05.05.2017 in collaboration with the wildlife department.
Chaudhary Lal Singh Hon’ble Minister for Forest, Environment & Ecology, J&K was the Chief Guest while Th. Gulchain Singh Charak-Former Minister & President DSS, presided over the function. Large number of distinguished and prominent citizens from all walks of life, J&K Ex Services League, Sarpanchs, Panchs, Numberdars/ Chowkidars, representatives of various social and religious organistions and hundreds of college and school students participated. The earthen pots were distributed to the public and children for keeping water for the birds. During the function all the participants were sensitized about the conservation of water and providing water to the birds in order to save their lives particularly in the Kandi areas.
Chaudhary Lal Singh appreciated the effort of DSS and spoke on the importance of preserving water and consideration to birds. He highlighted various efforts of his department in this regard and assured all kind of support to the Sabha for such a pious cause.
Briefing the press and participants Th. G.S Charak stressed for the revival of water bodies/ponds in the Kandi areas in order to recharge the ground water and availability of water during summer by conserving the rain water into these water bodies, as was being done during the olden times by our fore-fathers. He thanked all the participants, especially, the Hon’ble Minister Chaudhary Lal Singh and the officials of his departments extending all type of cooperation for making the event a great success.
The proceedings of the function were conducted by Sh. Janak Khajuria.
The gathering was addressed by Sh. Gambhir Dev Singh Charak who also briefed the participants about the benefits of maintaining ecological balance by conserving water, forests and saving the natural in habitats of birds and animals.
Prominent among those who were present on the occasion included S/Shri Dr. N. K. Dogra, Sh. Prem Sagar Gupta, Sh. Ghulam Ahmed Khawaja, Sh. Sohail Kazmi, Col Dr Virendra K Sahi- Vir Chakra, Brig. M. S. Jamwal, Sh. Syed Amanat Ali Shah, Sr. Kulwant Singh and a galaxy of citizens.
Mr. Neeraj Anand presented vote of thanks with special gratitude to the participants including 92.7 Big FM, Local Print and Electronic Media for carrying forward this noble message.
Later, the students and dignitaries carried earthen pots filled with water and installed them for birds in the adjoining Zanana Park.
The students drawn from different schools and colleges included: – Dogra College of Education, Dogra Law College, Dogra Degree College, Dogra Hr. Secondary School, Rich Harvest Bari Brahmana, Rich Harvest Shastri Nagar, Humanity Public School, S. D. Tarapuri, Luthra Academy, Humanity Public School, Jyoti Academy and Alexander Public School also attended.
